Pacific Harbors Council National Eagle Scout Association Committee Selects Eagle Scout Project-of-the-Year for 2012
The National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) has established the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award to recognize valuable service of an exceptional nature by a Scout to a religious institution, a school, community, or other entity. The award recognizes the Scout for his Eagle Scout leadership service project, which is part of the requirements for earning the Eagle Scout Award. Each local council is tasked with choosing a council-level winner, and from that pool, each region will pick a region-level winner. A national winner is then selected from the four regional finalists.
On or before January 21 of each year, an Eagle Scout, his parents, or any registered BSA volunteer (with the Eagle Scout’s permission) may submit his Eagle Scout leadership service project for consideration. The Scout must have passed his Eagle board of review in the prior calendar year (January 1 to December 31). The Council NESA committee chooses one winner from among the council nominees. The winner will receive a certificate and a bronze device for the Eagle Scout embroidered knot from the National Eagle Scout Association.
This year’s winner is Eagle Scout Tyler Stewart of Federal Way. Tyler became an Eagle Scout on June 19, 2012. He is a junior at Hazen High School. His service project was to develop a living Iraq War Memorial to Army Spc. Dennis M. Williams, Army Pfc Erin McLyman and Army Sgt. Brandon Hocking in Federal Way. He raised $1,500 in donations to purchase oak trees and granite plaques to honor 3 fallen soldiers who died while serving in the Iraq War. He worked with the city and organized a work party to plant and install the trees and plaques. Further, he organized a dedication ceremony for the families and the community. His team expended over 375 hours to the remembrance of the fallen.
Tyler Stewart’s name will be added to a perpetual plaque located in the council service center and he will be considered for the Regional Eagle Scout Project of the Year Award.
